GNR 2017 had it high points, but weather dampened much of the week. Temperatures in the mid-90's plus a severe thunderstorm hampered or eliminated a number of activities. The storm rolled into Forest City Wednesday afternoon and early evening with high winds--gust up to 60 mph and heavy rain. A number of tents, including the large entertainment venue, were damaged or destroyed. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Most of the coaches survived with little or no damage, but one awning was lost to the high winds.
VSW was fortunate in that no one was injured or sustained damage to their coaches. We did suffered damage to our row night display. Most of the fringe pictures were blown off, sign boards saturated with rain water and the frame for our VSW banner snapped off at its base.
Thursday began with an overcast sky that quickly turned to sunshine, oppressive humidity, and 90-degree temperatures. With a team effort, we were able to recover from the storm, and complete row decorations well before the judges arrived. Thanks to the hard work of the Craig's, Pacheco's and others, our recovery paid off with a 1st place in the 1-14 coaches category. This is at least the third consecutive year that VSW has won the row decoration contest. Pictures of our interpretation of Welcome to Fabulous Winnebago are in the photo gallery below.
VSW and all or our chapters continued there string by receiving Club and Chapter of Excellence Awards for 2017. The criteria for achievement was more stringent for 2017 and fewer clubs received the award compared to earlier years. Congratulations to all members of Vol State Winnies, Rocky Top Travelers, Music City Winnies, and West Tennessee Travelers. You are the reason we continue to be acknowledged by these awards.
Our tent display included information and reservation forms for our October WIT Tennessee State Rally. A number of GNR attendees stopped to ask questions about the rally and picked up reservation forms. Many expressed their intentions to join us in October. Two coaches, one from Washington state and one from Iowa, completed their reservations and paid their rally fees during GNR.
